Default For all you experts!!

All right here goes.

You turn up at a very small put and take fishery on a cold december day. No Fish rising and no fly life. Overcast sky with little wind. You're not allowed to use typical rainbow lures (Cats whisker, viva, ace of spades etc...). What is you approach?

Please include leader setup, flies(and sizes) how you would depth find etc.

I know what I would do but I think its nice to have as much knowledge as possible hence I'm picking your brains!

Clear water or murky water.

I'd have a 12 foot leader with two droppers, buzzers on the point and droppers, bigger one on the bottom and vary the colours although one at least would have to be black.

Let them sink right down and retrieve with a very slow figure of eight, if there is a cross breeze just let them drift round and watch the leader for any movement.

Sweet corn!

You need to understand the definition of an "expert". X is an unknown factor, "spurt" is a drip under pressure.

I'd be similar to SB but I would use a rough goldbead hares ear on the point a red buzzer on the 1st dropper and cruncher on the top dropper.

I did this last year one cold December day on a small rainbow trout stocked still water. It was such a cold day that all the water I had seen on route had ice covering it, I was surprised to find I could even fish. I had tremendous fun with a single weighted shrimp pattern fished very slowly so it would sink to the bottom. The pattern I used was not heavily weighted, just a few turns of lead. I fished it on a 9-10ft fluoro leader and as it slowly sunk I very slowly retrieved (about figure of 8 speed but I don't actually figure of 8 I just very slowly pull). It was a lot of fun, although I couldn't see any sign of fish life as I slowly pulled the line there was a great sense of anticipation....slowly pull.... slowly pull....slowly pull.. BANG ! Another fish on. The fish were surprisingly powerful considering the time of year.. for If the takes dried up I moved to a different spot. I seem to remember it taking a bit of searching initially but the trout were more or less in the deeper areas.

I can't claim to be an expert but this certainly worked for me.

Serves you right!

I'd suggest a river with either grayling for fly fishing or chub witha big lump of cheese paste.
