Default Is Time Up For Expensive Tackle

Yet another catalogue has popped through my door, selling rods 10ft for £649,
Also American reels at an incredible £450 plus spare spools at £180,
With the current climate is it time up for your Sages, Loomis waterworks etc,
And are these fishing companies going to be left with this over priced fishing tackle.

I don't know what you mean by "time up" but certainly I think that fewer rods will be sold, or if not fewer, then they'll sell at a lower price.

i meant are these companies going to be stuck with them, and also will anglers now get into the habit of not purchasing over priced tackle,
We all like nice things, my current reel cost me £125 which was a lot for me, but £450 plus £180 for a spool come on.

Don't forget that much of this gear is from the US and is much, much cheaper in its home market.

Time is not necessarily up if these companies adapt. Time will tell. If the gear becomes cheaper it could work in our favour, of course.

Why do people seem to be almost willing the upmarket tackle companies and those that buy their gear to suffer misfortune? There seems to be a collective glee when someone with a Sage rod or Simms waders is found to be deficient in some regard. Yet we never wish ill upon the bloke with the Shakespeare rod and Ocean PVCs. Why is this?

expensive tackle and cheaper tackle! nowadays imo there is very little between them.

a ford and a bentley will both get you where you want to go but one looks better and gets you the attention you crave and makes you feel better when driving it.

personally i am very happy using the mid range tackle i use, having a young family and a car takes up most of our income so a rod at £80 - £150 and a reel at £40 - £60 is my limit.

if i had the money for sage or loomis etc would i buy them ?? really not sure i would

I suppose the other points are that the Bentley is rather more comfortable and it will still be a Bentley when the Ford has become a washing machine.

i purchased a top of the range rod from greys, and the cork handle was so bad it had to be replaced.
I was looking at a row of Shakespear rods in a tackle shop and all had better cork handles than my rod,
I also purchase mid range tackle, and i have never bought a Sage, or a Loomis,
And at those prices i never will.

Only if you buy an old one, otherwise it's still a Volkswagen.

The real measure of the worth of a toy is the size of the grin - some people will still spend big numbers, while others laugh at the "bang per buck" of the Shakespeare range.

Go have fun.

a sage will still be a sage in 30 years time but who will be using it ? most of us keep a rod a few seasons then get a new model, the old one goes in the loft and may come out now and again but most of the time they never see daylight, at least the ford that gets turned in to a washing machine remains useful
