Question Is there any possible reason to NOT be a member of the Wild Trout Trust?

If so let's understand what reason or reasons prevent any of us from being members of the Wild Trout Trust.

Thank you

richard

Hi, Richard, I was member 470-plus, so I got in fairly early, but felt that I was a bit remote up here, so resigned and became a 'Friend of Eden Rivers Trust.' We are a like-minded organisation -- conservation rules, and all that. So, I would encourage anyone who is not a member, and who does not have a rivers trust outfit nearby, to join your organisation.
Having said that, I do feel that there are far too many, diverse organisations, the members of which could probably achieve more if they came together under a lesser number of hats. Anglers need one or two orgs. at most, less administration and more representation -- at government level, for example. TC

There is perhaps one main reason why, other associations/societys. Where does it stop, Salmon and Trout Association, A.C.A. Grayling Society et al (is that the right phrase?), all appear to have the best interests of fish/environment in mind, and admitedly some a little more proactive than others, but all with the same ends, should we be members of all, a couple or just one?....If all joined forces wouldn't that be quite a considerable organisation with suffient power, finances and resources not to mention political clout to make a huge difference...Just a thought!

Perhaps the forthcoming unified Angling Trust will attract more membership?

I can't help thinking that the large number of different angling and angling related conservation groups hasn't exactly helped over the years - maybe pooling of resources and membership will help. Without in any way meaning to be critical of its work, the name "Wild Trout Trust" does give the impression of a somewhat specialist group, for one particular species (although I know its concerns are rivers generally).

Well the good news is that they are all joining up and becoming one organisation, the angling trust http://anglingunity.co.uk/

The idea is to be as powerful as the RSPB, and with the end of division, there will hopefully be less barriers to people joining. Also, with so many members, we will have much more clout with the government.

Alas, knowing that this was in the pipeline, the STA managed to convince it's membership that they should become a charity, which has now prevented them joining the Angling Trust. So it's all the organisations united as one, plus the STA looking in. I won't go into the pro's and cons, or the politics, or the people protecting their little empires, as I don't know enough to have an opinion. I do however think that the STA have just committed professional suicide, and they'll wither and die as I believe people will see little reason to be a member of both, and huge reasons to join the angling trust.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE join the angling trust when it goes 'live' in the new year, and lets start getting the attention from parliament that fishing deserves.

I gather it's primarily a conservation organisation, rather than an angling /fieldsports lobby group.

Maybe that puts some people off. That wouldn't surprise me given the idiotic comments some people have been writing about herons.
