Default Odball Idea.

This year I bought a 9'6" seven piece 7/8 weight rod - its portable and handy - been out on a number of occasions and I use it when the wind gets up...

Then I noticed that you can assemble it using just six of the pieces - leaving out the lowest non-butt section - which gets an 8'3" which feels just right in the hand with the reel I use for 4/5 weight fishing...

Can anyone think of a good reason not to try this? Or is this suck-it-and-see.

I don't see any reason not to try it.

As long as the joints on the bottom section lock up tightly, I'd give it a shot with about a 5 wt line and see what happens. If you slowly increase the amount of line you put out and check the lowest joint often to make sure it stays together, I can't see any harm coming from it and you might find it's a sweet "new" light line rod.

I have a six piece travel rod that is supposed to work this way. It is nine foot and rated for a 6/7 wt. At nine foot it is actually quite a fast actioned seven, quite capable of casting an eight, but at seven and a half foot is more comfortable with the six. Label on the butt and rod bag read 7.5/9' #6/7. The section next to the handle is obviously parallel and designed to be left on or off. I imagine yours works the same way.

I think you have way much to much time on your hands and should take up Golf or some other all consuming pass time.
Have you tried decoupage?

I would check with the manufacturer if this is suitable to do. If they don't agree that it's okay you could invalidate any warranty should it break. As mentioned you have to be sure it's a real tight fit cos if it isn't we'll probably hear the splinter of carbon fibre down here.

Wink

I know of guys fishing wee burns using just the top two sections (of a four section rod). Obviously in this case, their is no reel seat so they simply popped the reel in their pockets!!

No reason why your idea wouldn't work, and you will have the bonus of a functioning reel to boot!

Regarding welshospreys comment, it certainly would invalidate your warranty if you told them, but only if you told them

Tried the idea out on Saturday - and it sort of works - 4 and five weights cast tolerably well.

Interesting.
