Default Weirwood re-opening

I read in one of the best fishing rag FFFT that Weirwood has been bought buy Michael Evans and he is looking to re-open it for flyfishing.

34 miles from central London its sure to be a hit and is not to small at 280 acres.

Its a fishery that i always wanted to fish years ago but was never able to due to living miles away down in the west country and being a teenager.

Did anyone fish it before it closed to fly fisherman?

Toby
i can well remember it being a fly fishery, way back when.Never fished it as i wasn't heavily into fly fishing wayback then.Think its been open for coarse fishing since.
Interesting news, its not too far for me to travel to and would give it a go if it reopened

I read the article with great interest, i remember dreaming of going to the country to fish when i was a London bound teenage flyfisher, Weirwood being one of those far away names that sounded so magical.
now i look forward to the inaugral weirwood social!!
always good news to have new venues, hope Michael makes a top job of it.

Yes, I read that too,
I'm at the other end of the country, so it doesn't affect me at all, but I found this quote interesting;
'Contrary to popular belief, trout and coarse fishing can coexist... Trout fishing, after all, enjoys it's peak time outside the main coarse fishing season.'

Won't the stocked rainbows quickly lock on to the maggots, sweetcorn and pellets that the coarse fishers chuck in? Ground baiting being central to the coarse fishing method.

I'm not, by any means, being sniffy or disapproving, I just wonder wether the coarse fishers will be plagued by stockie rainbows and the fly fishers will end up using , i dunno, sweetcorn imitations.

Weirwood ,
I have fond memories ,good hatches not huge fish but to a newcomer to fly fishing still something else .Had some very happy days there !
Big shame is its the wrong side of London for me ,grafham is probably as close !
Though I will certainly give it a try !
Hope they allow tubing !

I caught my first reservoir trout there at the age of 14. The first was on a Mallard & Claret, & then I noticed some little black flies on the surface and fish started rising to them. I raided my father's fly box & found the only little black dry fly in there & promptly caught three more before the weather changed and a cold wind put the fish down. I also caught what was then my best brown trout-an ounce shy of 3lb - from a boat some years later. I may very well give it a try if it open up again as it was an excellent buzzer water in its day.

Thumbs up

Another resevoir I would love to see open again is the Queen Mothers in Didcot, had great times there with some huge fish. This and Barn Elms used to be the my main stomping grounds. Probably 20 years ago!!

Never fished Weirwood but always heard great things about it...

Wasn't the Queen Mother at Datchet, Vinnie ? The nearest reservoir to Didcot is Farmoor....

I fished Weirwood a few times way back in the 1970's when I was starting stillwater trouting. It's certainly a very pretty place, on the edge of Ashdown forest. I hope Michael Evans can manage to keep it reasonbly well stocked with trout.
