Try increasing the diameter of the rod both above and below the ferrule in order to improve your grip on the two sections. An old pal and I always carried a small selection of rubber tubing of different diameters, to suit a range of rods -- off-cuts about 3 or 4 inches long, split from end to end. Slip a tube over each section, close to the joint, grip firmly and pull while twisting, but keep the twisting minimal. Some say that you shouldn't twist rod sections, but the advice for assembling them is to close the joint on hollow rods by pushing, with a slight twist to align, according to one manufacturer. TC
PS Whatever you try, be absolutely certain that you pull in a straight line, any bending, and it could be 'good-bye rod!!' Good luck, TerryC
