Angry Wilson angry over celebrity angler

Reading Angling times this week, there's an interesting snippet about " Old Chuckle Chops " John Wilson.

Apparently Channel 5 have revealed plans to air a second series of Robson Green's Extreme Fishing.

"Angling legend John Wilson, who presented more than 100 episodes of the famous Go Fishing series has moved swiftly to condemn Channel 5 plans."

He said:

" In the light of the controversy surrounding the first series, I find it unbelievable it has been commissioned for a second, especially when something like Catching the Impossible can't find it's way onto terrestrial TV.
The celebrity culture we live in is frankly scandalous and it seems we have gone back to the bad old days when fishing programmes were presented by the likes of Jack Charlton. "
Way aye man, go on Johnno.

Is Mr. Wilson in a position to make this statement as he is now in fact himself a celebrity ?

OR

Is it the case where he has taken this stance because Robbo's celebrity status carries more sway when it comes to getting any kind of programme, angling or otherwise onto mainstream TV than his own and there is possibly some annoyment there, albeit that Mr. Wilson's own angling credentials without doubt outweigh those of the celebrities ?

What's "Catching the Impossible"?

Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

He may be a celebrity angler but at least Wilson gained his status via angling and he is a far better alround angler than most despite the annoying catch phrases and giggling.

He paved the way for most of the current crop of TV anglers.

Hear hear,
the trouble is that although no self respecting angler would watch more than a few minutes of the patronising c...p ,the midget himself is a granny-magnet thus guaranteeing ratings. Much the lame as those two luvvies on motorbikes.

A brilliant series of three hour long programmes about fish and fishing and fishers. Currently available on DVD, Hugh Miles made it. The underwater scenes are the best I've ever seen. Worth getting just for the rudd and the perch...

I'm not disputing that and tried to emphasize John Wilson's credentials as an angler in my question.

What I was trying to do was stimulate debate on the fact about whether it should only be accredited angler's who present TV angling shows or whether enthusiastic angling celebrities should present them also.

We all know the views on " Extreme fishing with Robson Green "

BUT

Is Mr. Wilson correct to criticise celebrities from an angling perspective when they are in the position to criticise his credentials as a celebrity ?

Re. the point about him having paved the way, I agree with you totally but is it not the way that although the " Trailblazers " have laid the track, they should not look on those who follow the path with disdain.
