Default Fly Fishing Snobs - Do they really exist?

Well do they?

Many years ago I read in a local Natal snobmag - I think it was called "African Life", that fly fishing for trout could only ever be practised by Englishmen of true breeding. In fact many thought that only titled people who ever be able to cast with a fly rod.

And certainly in Natal (Now called KwaZulu Natal) there was a plethora of pukka wallahs. For example, in Peitermaritzburg there exists a gentlemen's club that only admit Englishmen of title and breeding. I am told that the members used to fish a certain very exclusing stretch of the Umzimkulu River in the Natal Midlands.

But quite honestly I have yet to meet a fly fishing snob from the ranks of true capable fly fishers. The only snobbery I have heard put about fly fishing has come from the ranks of the non-anglers.

What do you think? Does snobbery still exist amongst the ranks of fly fishers?

Ah yes, that brings back memories, we used to call them punkah wallahs. Some of those blighters can run as fast as a Gazelle you know, jolly good sport.

I have met some snobs, but even on the exculsive beats, when you sit in the hut,the talk is only of fishing. The pratt's tend to be the ones who really don't know what they are talking about.

Question Snobs...???

I've met a couple of "dray flay" snobs, one in particular sticks in my memory.
was fishing the Aberdeenshire Don at Kintore a few yrs ago now, Had a few on the wets. A young lad stopped to watch, He asked what I was using, so I stopped fishing and was showing him my set up... next was a chap calling to the lad to come away, the young fellow said thats my dad, he wont let me fish the way you are..He says its unsporting I was a bit taken aback, what a pratt BUT THEY ARE ABOUT....

Another wee story,When i was in the''Worldwide Fisherman'' think that's correct in Florida .I was talking to some guys ,who when I mentioned that we regularly fished wet fly in river and loch to search the water, lost interest and said they only fished to targeted fish.ie:- dry fly snobs:- pratts.
