Default Anglers Who Make Up Catches At End Of Day

HI FELLOW TROUTERS

JUST A QUICK COMMENT ON FISHERY CATCH RETURN FORMS OR BOOKS. WHY IS IT THAT SOME PEOPLE HAVE TO MAKE UP STORIES AND LIE ABOUT HOW MANY THEY CAUGHT. I WAS AT A FISHERY RECENTLY FISHING NEXT TO ANOTHER CHAP WHO SEEMED CANNY. ANYWAY WE WERE HAVING A CHAT WHILST FISHING AND THEN JUST GOT ON WITH THE FLY CASTING. I LEFT 5 MINUTES BEFORE HIM AND HAD A CUPPA IN MY VAN, AND I NOTICED THE FELLA FILLED IN THE RETURNS. HE LEFT AND I WENT IN TO FILL MY CATCHES IN, AND NOTICED HE MADE ALOAD OF RUBBISH UP ABOUT WHAT HE CAUGHT. I NEVER SEEN HIM CATCH EVEN ONE, YET HE PUT QUITE A FEW DOWN, WITH THE WEIGHTS OF HIS CATCH. THIS MUST HAPPEN ALOT AT FISHERIES, BUT WHY DO IT ? BEATS ME..
ANYONE SEEN THE SAME THING ?

Quite often!! Don't let it bother you m8 there only cheating themselves. Some anglers are too big headed to say they blanked.

Some anglers used to fill in false catch returns at some waters in the belief that the owner would restock more heavily.

yes a lot of anglers will add a couple on in the hope that the stocking may improve but i dont think it makes much difference as the lakes trusts only stock what they think reasonable

It's funny; I used to organise a team in a 24 hr bird race and we were quite successful, doing the "double" (1st to 100 species and most species) 2 years in a row before the last F&M outbreak killed it off. I used to get the same question from friends every time - "how do you prove you've seen the bird?" (Actually more are heard than seen - and you need 3 team members to confirm that you've had the same bird and the ID and the time for the record sheet). There are two answers to this - one is that you'd only be cheating yourself (although the scrutineers would be up to anything really stupid - like a Glossy Ibis in Birkenhead) and secondly, you'd need to be quite inventive to make it up ("where shall I pretend to have seen a bullfinch and when do I make the decision to have seen it?"). It was also - like some catch returns - done for genuinely scientific purposes - tracking changes in population. Rather like catch returns it's both pointless and misleading to deliberately falsify them. So why bother? As has been said, the only person you are really fooling is yourself. The stringers become well known.

All anglers, no matter how capable will blank from time to time. It's part of the sport and we must accept it as such.

People who tell lies about what they catch are misleading the fishery managment who rely on accurate catch returns to plan the stocking

I think a lot of exaggerated catch returns are down to anglers hoping for increased stocking rather than to make themselves look more important or competent.

For example, they have an eight fish ticket and only catch four, so they stick in a return for 8 fish taken, in the mindset that they paid for those eight and hope that the fishery will restock as per the returns, thus increasing the stock level (by four fish in this one instance) and with it their chances of bagging up next time.

I know, see and hear a lot of anglers doing this. Not sure it works though, as so many anglers don't bother posting returns.

If this happens regularly on small waters, I feel sorry for the fishery owners, hard enough as it is trying to make a buck in this game, especially when you have the inevitable instances of more fish taken than the ticket allows, poor C&R practices, cormorant predation, poaching etc.

Tightlines!

The Pirate.
