Default ghillie services / any ideas

I have always wanted to fish the spey or tweed for the notable salmon . As i am new to fly fishing im realising it takes years to read a river , and even longer if you have knowone to teach you . For my christmas this year i was thinking about a day on the spey or tweed with a ghillie . Iv always wanted to do this and was wondering if anyone has had this experience? who's recommended ? whats it like ? wheres the best place to go ?

all advise and replies are appreciated as always

Smile Call him 'gillie'. . .

I believe that 'williegunn' on this forum is a Spey gillie of some renown, brush up your English grammar, as well as your teeth, and he may well offer to take you out for a day next year.

Ally Gowans is a highly respected and well known angler, and inventor of the famous "Allys Shrimp".

I've not met the guy personally, but know plenty who have. They have nothing but good things to say about Ally, and I'm sure a session with him will put you in safe hands, and you will certainly learn a heck of a lot.

Don't know if he's on the forum, but here's a link to his website...

Hope that helps, and have a great time!

Alex

Willie Gunn is an excellent suggestion ,if the tweed however is your fancy a day with George at Dryburgh North is an experience to cherish !Not sure if I could cope with a week with George though !

BB I had spey casting lessons with him a couple of months ago. He is a very nice guy and an absolute professional. That said he doesn't suffer fools gladly and didn't pull any punches when I showed him my shonky, self-taught doublehanded overhand cast....felt like a naughty schoolboy.

I have another lesson with him and will probably take it next spring.

Marky. Bit confused re your reference to the Tweed and Spey along with the cracking photo. Am I right in saying its the 'auld Brig' at Invercauld on the Dee? My great uncle was a ghillie to the Queen Mum round those parts and an uncle still works as a keeper up there....if its not the Dee then guess I am just talking oot my &rse as usual.

The Dee at Mar Lodge is a stunning beat and is number one on Scottish beats I have been meaning to fish

To be honest i'm not really fussy what river aslong as salmon is the target species . I'm going to check out all the guys mentioned above , and iv contacted willie . I think the experience of having a guide and learning from him and new skills will be a great day that i will remember and use the skills for years to come .
