Red face embarrasing question someone help quick please

i have just took the line of my reel to clean it as i have been practising on grass and its dirty,
instead of leaving it attatched to the backing i cut it off as i did'nt like the knot strength then my dog came and got tangled up in it and mixed the ends up and i dont know which end goes to the reel first,

it is a shakespeare wf 6#

i have tried a search but couldnt find anything

i feel a right numpty

Hi,

If you feel along the line, there will be a slightly thicker end. That's the Fly end. The thinner end is attached to the backing...

The thick bit goes at the front.IE the thin running bit is tied to the backing.

hi thanx for that just had a look and they are both thin at the end but one end thinner for longer if you know what i mean,so do i put the longer thinner end to the backing,

The smaller thin bit is called the taper,The thick bit is called the head,and the long thin bit is called the running line.
I recommend that you get ''Trout From Stillwater '' by Peter lapsly.
