No idea from a business point of veiw. As angler I really have no interest in big trout. If I wanted to catch a big fish I would fish for carp or pike. I think trout should be trout sized. I would put far more importance on the quality, the look, proportions and condition of a stocked trout than them being over sized.

I think when this has been discussed on here before there is a general agreement on quality over size, but the business reality might not be what is reflected here.

1st, people keep saying big trout, as 3lb said on another thread the fish dont have to be big. the person applying for a badge from your fishery has to catch one of the 3 biggest fish from your fishery to get a badge, so if you stock all 2lb fish then the person might get a badge for something a bit bigger than 2lb.

next for the price of joining the troutmaster comp per fishery i have heard is about £250 not to sure on that though, you get free adveritsing in the mag and possibly a visit with a write up. then at the end of the year you can possibly have 36 anglers fishing a fish off (so 36 day tickets that might not come otherwise).

seems like a good idea to me, i am not a fishery owner though, there will be better people on here to give advice but its a start

You could make a bit of extra money by offering a sewing service for the punters troutmaster's badges.

I reckon being a Troutmaster's water can only increase business as there have got to be guys out there who want that badge and also that place in the final enough to fish regularly at a water just to get there. They don't have to catch a massive fish, just catch either one of the three largest specimens that month to gain entry. Having said that, I don't know if it costs anything for the fishery to register so I guess you've got to take that into consideration.

I see where you're coming from Fossil but does being a Troutmaster's water mean you have to stock fish above a certain size to qualify, or can you stock larger specimens up to say 10 lb without going to monster proportions ?

You could well be right Don. I am thinking really of the way it has been portrayed in the magazine with rows of photographs of anglers holding huge fish. The pages would not look out of place in a carp fishing magazine.

In all fairness I think that Trout Fisherman has been trying to move away from that perception.
