Default Which is the best fly fishing magazine?

For myself, fanatical angler and fly fisher that I am. I tend to spend too much on fishing magazines. I don't have a favourite because often a really good article could be in different mags.

But this month, from WH Smiths, I have purchased:

Trout & Salmon, Trout Fisherman and Fly Fishing & Fly Tying.

On odd occasions I get a Trout magazine from South Africa or Field & Stream from the USA.

But what is your favourite?

I prefer the Forum now to any of the mags, i also used to purchase them all but have now cut down to one, the Fly Fishing and Fly tying.

Fly Fishing & Fly Tying is my favourite. Just renewed my subscription at the BFFI and got a free "gift", but the mag itself is definitely worth it.

I knew you'd have to get a mention of "South Africa" in sooner or later though. Well done for lasting this long!!!!!!

This question gets well aired on the forum every few months

It all depends what your criteria are.

Plenty of beginners and improvers get a lot out of Trout Fisherman and Today's Fly Fisher (or is it Total Fly Fishing now ?), but the consensus is that you more or less outgrow either or both as your experience and skill develop.

A lot of us older lags like FF & FT while commenting that its production values - not the content - might be better. Some like Trout & Salmon, others bemoan that mag's relative lack of editorial content as compared to adverts and the (now superfluous ?) fishing reports. Yer pays yer money....

A few of us have fond memories of the old "Angling" magazine that Brian Harris formerly edited - however the lack of an obvious successor to it probably shows that the modern appetite is for targeted and specialist offerings as opposed to a mag that seeks to cover all 3 disciplines of coarse, game and sea.

Subscribe to Trout and Salmon but my jury is still out on how good it really is, and usually buy FF & FT. Don't care too much for the still water bias of TF. However, this forum is more useful than all put together, and if you want fantastic photos, look no further than www.catchmagazine.net and www.thisisfly.com IMHO.

I know what you mean though; if I can't be fishing I like to be reading about it and/or watching propgrammes/DVDs on it.

I usually buy which ever one has an article that gets my attention. If none do then I buy none. I have to say I think Trout and Salmon has gone to the dogs in the last few years. Who wants to read about some dog that can retrieve fish, or old "Wilfred" rabbiting on about some river he fished one hundred years ago. No its hard to beat this forum best thing since sliced bread.

I was tempted to put: When you say "best" do you mean "most absorbant"? but that would be disingenuous as I buy magazines on a pretty regular basis.
