Default Converted....

Well I did it! I spent yesterday on the River Anton fly fishing for grayling. Despite the horrendous weather I caught 2 grayling and a nice brownie of about 2.5-3lb, of course they all went back.

Coming from carp fishing I have a feeling I have found what was missing, namely the joy of mobility. I had an old scruffy waistcoat, some cheap old bag but it was enough to carry all I needed for the day. No more bivvy, bedchair or bite alarms, pure heaven.

Some of my casting was diabolical, I ended up with numerous 'wind' knots, lost 2 flies and snapped 2 leaders in bushes, but at the end of the day I wished I'd had another few hours.

I am well and truly converted.

I agree that the mobility thing is it for me. But what ever you enjoy is important.

Personally though I remember from my child hood and I am going to do this this winter. There is a great deal of joy you can get from stalking with a float rod.

Long trotting for grayling all you need is some weights, a spare float or two in case you get snagged and a small box of maggots/worms. It might not have the artistry of fly fishing but it is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon on a high flowing river.

Don't get me wrong, I will still deadbait and lure fish for pike and at some point will buy another centre pin outfit for long trotting as Carlos suggested.

However, for the next few seasons I will mainly be fly fishing, be it for trout, grayling, chub, carp or pike.
