Post Did You Visit the BFFI?

Hi All.
Just wondering if you went to the BFFI at Trentham. It was my first time and I really enjoyed it. I picked up some bargains especially off the StoneFly stand still spent a fortune though but it was nice to have so much variety of materials in one place. I also got some valuable information of the tyers.

I did find that some tyers had more time to show you teqniques than others but that's people I suppose saying that the wealth of information available was fantastic. I can think of a thousand things I could have asked now!

I can't compare it against other years so would be interested to hear your thoughts. All in all I thought it was well organised, plenty of parking spaces and enough there to satisfy most of us. I had a nice pork roll as well. So A big well done to all who were involved . I will certainly go again next year.

It was again a great day out but was surprised no cars in the overflow park, credit crunch beginning to bite i'm afraid. There were some good bargins if you looked around and a wealth of info (hope i can remember it all). I really enjoy these events everyone is very helpful. Well done to the organisers!!

For anyone who's never been look out for the spring show in Newark. All in door in early March

There has been a proliferation of scale model makers over the last four years at Trentham and I think this is a shame. Sure these insects look amazing, but the fact that they are built around a hook seems incidental because you wouldn’t fish with them. I walked along the whole table and searched for someone knocking up dry flies but was disappointed.

Visited the Buglife stand and presentations by WTT, Waterlog, Leek & District, Waltons Cottage and Paul Morgan books. Came away with a packet of dubbing, a couple of books and caught up with a few old friends.

Really enjoyed the show, especially Roy Christie tying dry flies.

The casting pool was better placed this year and the AAPGAI casting demonstrations where excellent. Really must stop over and see both days next year, just too much to take in on one day. Good to see Scott rods and try out some on the casting pool.

We had a really good time, and I've just realised that the very pleasant bloke who got us to join the WTT was PaulG off this forum

We went I didn’t go for anything particular but ended up spending some money. We popped into the tying tent to say hello to Han’s but could not find him it was about lunch time he must have went for a bite to eat, the realistic flies was amazing but no would sell one for my wife’s collection, Christopher Helm made her a mouse fly while we waited it really looks like a mouse he was very good explaining the process and a perfectionist every time I thought it was finished he made a few more tweaks. The guys on the Snowbee stand was very helpful and not pushy I did not feel like they wanted a sale at any cost just genuine advise and honest answers to my questions made a nice change all in all a very good day.

Was a great show once again. Good to meet a lot of new people and catch up with many again from last years show.

If anyone has tried to email us since Sunday our server has been down. It should be back up and running this afternoon. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Cheers
Mat

The Saturday was busy but Sunday went very quiet in the afternoon with most stands being broken down by 4pm.Steve and all of the team make this a very professional show but I agree that the credit squeeze seems to have reduced numbers, both visitors and exhibitors. It is great to meet up with all of the old faces but I made the same comment as Warren , if you discounted the "model makers " and the weird flies , there were very few producing anything that would catch trout in my rivers. Maybe the tyers could be encouraged to tie "proper" flies as newcomers to this part of the hobby could be forgiven for thinking that the average trout fly takes hours to make and loses interest.
But totally off topic, I wondered at the number of anglers waggling rods, what can this tell you other than what it weighs?Even getting someone to bend the tip whilst you hold the butt will only give a clue as to tip/through action won't it?Or am I missing something?

Yes, I was waggling that Scott rod to see how it weighs/feels in the hand. I then took it outside with a line on to see how it cast on the casting pool.
