Got one in the loch of Girlsta in Shetland earlier this year late at night, the fish rose a few times close in so I ran over to cover it thinking it was a brownie it rose again and I covered it with a black sedge hog it took straight away, knew right away something wasnt right then saw the red of the fins through the water.

Lochs Lochy and Arkaig have very large char because of the fishfarms on them.
above Lubnaig you have the smaller lochs Voil and Doin which hold large stocks of small char.

Default Char

Many moons ago I had some nice Char from the Garry system, lots of them in fact. Caught them mostly on streamers, but I never carried a camera much in those days.

Sadly, the Garry system also has smolt cages which have no doubt changed the way the fish feed, but it's worth a visit in the latter half of the season

I know a few of the high lying glacial lochs with them in ...eg loch Avon.

Might stand more chance getting them on fly than the deeper big lochs.

Hugh Falkus wrote a lot about catching charr by Windermere trolling methods in 'Freshwater Fishing' - co-written with Fred Buller.

There's been a fair bit about them on this forum too. Do a search for charr.

Ron Greer's book 'Ferox Trout and Arctic Charr' is a good read; Ron discovered a new subspecies, well a genetically distinct variety, in Loch Rannoch.
