Default Monsal Fishery

I know the local club allows day tickets on a short stretch of the Wye at Monsal. Is it worth fishing? Does it get hammered? I was thinking of taking my Dad maybe next season. He's an experienced fly fisher, but not so much on rivers - do you think it might be a suitable fishery to take a less experienced river fisher on?

Many thanks,
Matt

They call it St Peters Gate - Why? Because you've just entered trout heaven. I have caught the 'river bug' through 2 visits this summer. There are a max of 4 rods per day.

I went as a complete novice the first time - I was blown away. I've heard it said the Test & Itchen don't even compete (Never been so can't comment)

GO AND ENJOY MATE!!

I only have two things against Monsal.

One is that they have whacked the price up to £40..I know it's the only day ticket water on the Wye, where you can nymph, but I think they have taken advantage of that..the Dry only Peacock water is £35 for about ten times as much river.

That brings me to the other point..I don't think there is enough river there for four rods, unless you know each other.

I still go, tho'.

It doesn't get hammered and it is a very worthwhile place to take your dad.

The Monsal Dale fishery is not the St Peter's Gate beat. That distinction belongs to the water a little further upstream - the private water of the Cressbrook & Litton club.

Sorry for my ignorance - just assumed as the pic in a recent FF&FT was head lined as such it was refering to the valley it all sits in.
