I find they are usually much more supple with better turn over.

You could try making some Singapore Leaders...

I blow hot and cold on these things..sometimes I think "fantastic", other times "why bother".

However, I do remember a time at Monsal Dale. It was quite windy and I was using the furled leader for nymphing. A rise suddenly started and rather than rerig, I just tied a tapered leader onto the furled leader and then a couple of feet of tippet.

The whole thing looked most inelegant but the turnover with a nasty cross wind was amazing.

Likewise. The improved turnover benefits IMHO are most evident with smaller dries and small unweighted nymphs, for larger dry flies I no longer bother. And if you fish all day they do get waterlogged and noisy on lift-off (even if treated the night before), so you need two. And the furled leader is more visible than nylon, so for the same length of leader you have less concealment. I mostly use them on streams where I need to use a shortish leader for short pinpoint accurate casts

I did notice an improvement in turnover with a furled leader but recently it's been acting like a sink-tip! What's the best way to make it float again!?!

all great arguments for using singapore leaders IMO, cheap(so cheap you can afford to trash a dozen in a session and not think about it), easy and fast to make, dont get waterlogged, turn over brilliantly, as they are made essentially of tippet they are not visible line the furled leaders, it is really easy to taylor them to the situation, you can sit on the bank and make one in 5 mins with a longer butt section or a couple of feet shorter... all the pros of a furled leader without many of the cons

Grease it Up!!

Mucilin or Duck grease are your best bet. They will sink if not greased as they absorb water. You can use them as a sink tip though if you like as this works great when nymphing.

Checkout Jim Williams Furled leaders (google foir his site)

You now have a cheap midge tip without having to pay £40

I'm not keen on a braid loop on the end of my floating lines, so I needle knotted one to a floater that I use for single fly work and was pleased with the results.
I also have one connected with a braid loop so I can swap between foating and sinking as said above cheap nymph tip.
Is it better than a tapered nylon leader? No, just differant.
