Trout Of Doubt is on a distinguished road
Default Stocking

[I dare say this has been covered before but nothing obvious came up from a search. In that light, appologies for re-opening such a painfull wound but I'm going to ask anyway ]

When Brown Trout are so sought after, why do lakes seem to get stocked with Rainbows?
Is it cost, ease of breeding, or suitability to still water ... or something else?

All of the above,, theyre faster growing, easier to feed, easier to catch etc etc. Plus, i think while most of the posters on here seem to revere the brown trout, as i do, the majority of the country's anglers couldn't give a Matt and Luke what species they catch.

well a fishery stocked with rainbow can stay open all year round, therefore offering more in terms of fishing than a exclusively brown trout water

Browns seem to have been in the "too hard" file for the last 10-12 years for quite a few commercial stillwater fisheries in the part of the world where I fish, other than for the occasional token gesture, due to:
  • Cost as noted above
  • The likelihood of a significant amount of the lake's stock being unavailable to anglers for up to half the year due to close seasons and the browns' "mid summer sulk" in lakes;
  • And possible issues with close seasons generally.
All of which I understand, but it does seem rather a shame.
