Angry Peg Hoggers !

Hi Guys

Well its stockie bashing season again and the return of my pet hate "Peg hoggers" at your local fishery

To me if you leave your peg ......say for a call of nature or a cup of tea from the fishery cabin you should take your gear with you, i do !

Worse still is the guy who takes his 4/5 fish ton his kill ticket, buggers off for a pot noodle ! and to weigh in his fish, leaves all his gear on the peg so no one else can use it then spends 30 mins chatting, drinking coffee etc. before returning for his 4 or 5 or endless C & R This often seems to happen on really cold days and yes his pegs seem to be the only mone yielding fish

I was discussing this one day with a guy at a fishery he told me of the exact scene as above, his first time at a big new local fishery, he stepped over the guys gear and started casting the guy who had been away in the cabin for some time, popped his head out, pot noodle in hand shouting "Oi im fishing there ! " the fisherys owner was with him. "No your not your eating a ruddy pot noodle" ! he replied the fishery owner stayed silent and by doing so seemed to be backing the "peg hogger"

The guy said he will never go there again !! So be warned owners

Out of interest id like to think what you guys think of "Peg hoggers"

I've never come across it personally. Maybe its because I'm a fly fisherman that keeps on the move. I've always though that match fisherman that course fish had pegs....

I would just step in and start fishing it or stand 2 yards away and cast into the spot

I hate it

it used to happen all the time on a certain fishery in the north east of england and the fishery owner was the same as you mention, happy to let it happen. Needless to say i dont fish that lake when im in the area.

i used to hate this, the worst is when they leave their bags and walk to the next peg with just rod and net, on small fisheries half the pegs can be taken up by bags

I don't like it either. Have been the victim of it on days when I have found casting from some places difficult due to high winds. Even though the pegs are empty for a long time, there are two rods and a pile of gear sitting in them.

I have never tried to fish in such a spot and would prefer to avoid any confrontation. I now always make sure that when I leave my peg for any length of time (i.e. lunch) I wind in and take my rod and all my gear with me.

A couple of years ago mate and myself were fishin a pool with one almighty shoal drifting arond. Not on em and it was fruitess.Anyhow, two guys were following them around until they drifted towards a corner.I shot round the opposite side, to be shouted at----oi you can have a crack when we have done
I shouted back
go forth and multiply

Surely this is something that needs to be addressed and the fishery owners should state on the ticket that an angler leaving a peg for more than a certain period of time should vacate their peg. I can see the point when someone is going to the loo or to buy or borrow a bit of tackle but surely they should return to the peg immediately.

Another point is anglers hogging a fish producing peg while they are on it. In Salmon fishing the general rule is cast retrieve and step if the beat is busy. Some fisheries up our way have movement rules some don't and you can watch a guy next to you who's using the same fly and line as you have, pull in fish after fish till he bags up only to be replaced by another angler who continues to do the same while you go home empty handed.

I did this once when the occupier had gone to the other side of a 12acre lake, leaving his stuff on the peg.

I preceeded to fish there and ended up catching him on a false cast in the hat as he stood behind me waitng and arguing for HIS peg back so he can catch fish again.....

Needless to say, the 8lb Brown I pulled off the peg didnt do his anger much good!!!
