Default Has anyone ever used silicon oil for Dry Flies??

Just a quick question, Has anyone ever used silicon oil for dry flies and if so how good would you rate it?

I heard of a guy who uses an industrial silicon oil that would be used on factory machines and he swears by it.

If I am not much mistaken most dry fly treatments are silicon based - sprays and gels.

Can't see why it wouldn't work. My only hesitation would be if industrial stuff had other traces of chemicals in it which would give it a scent?

Did hear a good tip the other day,not tried it myself, but would seem logical and that was using lipsalve on your flies to make them float.if it doesnt work at least you can use it on your lips instead.

Some years ago there was always someone going on about not using it on p.v.c. flylines as they reckoned it could damage them by acting as a solvent I think. It may well have been some line manufacturers, when they were trying to promote their own lubricants.

Then one of the techi's at Mucilin wrote in Trout Fisherman that they reckoned their product would cause no harm, so the argument went quiet after that.

Many companies make line cleaners/lubricants/polishes & the like these days, I've used a plumbers o ring lube & it works at least as well as a makers own product; it's also much cheaper & it's designed not to damage the nitrile/rubber/silicone.

Polyurethane lines are not an area where I can comment on as I've yet to try any lubes on them.
