Question dipping nets

Whats your views on dipping nets?

I ask this question as personally I see not much point apart from if used abroad, but saying this, doing it here surely not only nets, but flies, reels, lines, rods, waders and anything which has been in contact with other water should also be dipped aswell to avoid and totally protect a water.Just doing a net seems a slight protection but not a full protection. They all come in contact at some stage.Just my opinion.

From memory re coarse fishing nets, anything that is going to cause problems will be dead when the net has dried out. Only nets that remain wet between trips or venues cause problems, I think.

As for views, if it was a rule of a fishery I would happily comply. Why would I not?

one of our local fisheries insists that you use their nets and won't allow you to use your own. all the coarse fisheries that i go to insist that both keepnets and landing nets be dipped in accordance with fishery rules...

As above statement
would have thought anything untoward would be dead as a dodo once a net has dried.
Some of the coarse fisheries dips are foul and i do wonder if it does any good at all!!!!.

I do a fair amount of coarse fishing and have to dip nets at 90% of commercial fisheries and club waters too, but it's a pointless exercise.

IF the net dip is fresh (not diluted with rainwater etc), AND the nets are fully submerged for 15 minutes, you may kill some of the bacteria on them, but the only way to rid your nets of any parasites is to completely dry them out, in direct sunlight as it is the UV rays that do all the work.

Is this true?, I can remember in the foot and mouth outbreak that I wasn't required to stand in a footdip for 15 minutes to make sure I didn't spead the disease. There must be some type of dissinfectant that is a bit more 'instant' than a quarter of an hour

Hi, MF, I think disinfecting tackle on arrival at, and departure from, fisheries is a good idea. The only one I know of locally that offers that precaution is Bessy Beck. You never know when you might pick up 'bugs' at a fishery. If I was aware of someone who had holidayed in Norway, or nearby, being on a water when I arrived, I'd be happier fishing if I could dip my gear. Now I don't want any rude remarks, not even from my friend, Mr T
Cheers Terry C

A quick dip will kill some bacteria, but not all.

There's plenty of info on dips here

Dip Time

The MAFF recommendation is for immersion in the disinfectant for 15-30 minutes to achieve complete sterility. However, a shorter dip period will kill many of the potential diseases and will be far more acceptable to anglers.
