Default Nail knots

Just as a matter of interest how long or short do you leave your tag ends??
I'm thinking shooting heads!
Any tips on making the knot travel throught the rod rings a bit smoother.
Backing is Airflo Polyshoot in 30lbs onto an 11 weight shooting head.

Hi, Accony,
I don't use nail knots, but I have known people who used Vycoat, which is liquid vinyl, to make a tapered join. I have used it over whipped loops and whipped
connections. It was made by Veniards, but I don't know if it is still available.
Cheers, TC

hi,

I use nail knots alot. I clip them down tight about 1mm. use 5 turns max but 30lb is big.

Try using a braided loop and attach the 30lb line to the loop, but use three nail knots instead of a sleeve to secure the braided loop to the flyline. The reason, sleeves sometimes fail, even with glues. Glues weaken or crack the flyline where the glue is applied (speeking from experience).

Use 8lb leader for the nail knots, one at the top, middle and the end. use glue at the knot at the flyline end if you wish.

Hope this helps,
Buzzr

If you have the ability to tie a nail knot then you should have no problem making a blind whip finish (or 2 ) on the braid, much neater than a nail knot and with a couple of coats of varnish or a tiny drop of superglue ,very robust.
I have been using this system for years.

You can also buy a product by Loon (Knot Sense I think available from places like Sportfish) which you can cover the nail knot with, and harden with a UV lamp. This won't snag on the line guides and smaller and smoother than a braided loop.
