Default How thick a line?

Currently reading "The fly-fishers text book" by Theophilus South and there is a terrific quote regarding line thickness
"the material, I repeat, should be silk and hair twisted, and the end, for about 12 yards, may taper slightly; though, perhaps it is as well to have it of uniform substance throughout, of about the thickness of the "D" in the 3rd octave of your sister's harp"
Now I forget how thick is that?

Fish fine enough that you get takes, but not enough that you get breaks.

Sound advice..............you may get more takes if you fish fine but this achieves nothing if you are broken. Gear your tackle to the size of fish in the water that you are fishing.

i am having murders with some trilene sensation at the moment, 5.6 lb but put a knot in it and it is as strong as wet tissue paper, tried every knot going, bought a roll of 4 lb mono for 75 pence in asda and it is brilliant by comparison, just larger diameter...
