Productive fishing
Hi, John,
The brown trout season ends on Sept 30th, salmon fishing ends Oct 14th, I was out checking Eden on Monday prior to writing up text for our local paper, so I have to get it right. Eden was still slightly coloured, but down to a nice level for trout or salmon fishing.
Unfortunately, activity was minimal during a four-hour visit to the middle river near Temple Sowerby. From the A66 road bridge, not a rise was seen on the Penrith AA water. The expected emergence of the late summer and autumn generation of both Large Dark Olive and Medium Olive duns has been poor, in my opinion. Pale watery types and BWOs have not been terribly impressive in numbers, but a bit more reliable. We are enjoying a spell of better weather at the moment, which should last for a few more days, so there could be a flourish of insect activity to brighten things up.
Trout should be feeding readily now, especially the broody fish, and if surface flies are sparse, you could well score using nymph tactics.
Eamont, according to reports from friends and fellow club members, has fished pretty well, either at the lower end or up towards Pooley Bridge.
Ullsawater sport is supposed to pick up in September, when it pays to concentrate on beck mouths. The bigger fish should be migrating soon, but at the moment our local still water, stocked fisheries are probably having the best summer fishing for several seasons. No weed problems, or algae,
on the likes of Blencarn, Watendlath or Bessy Beck, for example.
Daddy longlegs, the bigger species especially, have been almost non-existant to date, but still water fishers will be hoping things improve before their season is over, usually later on, next month.
The smaller tributaries should have a few bigger trout in them now, their fish are more free rising, but wary and fast, and they will continue to feed, usually, after the fish on the main rivers go off. They are not usually 'picky'.
Hope that helps.
TC
If you try Go Wild, beat 6 fished OK for mrtrout and I recently, and Scandal Beck might be worth a visit. Not easy, fish small usually, but a challenge.
