Default Dry Fly's

Now i come to you guys for an advice . Dry flying is propaly the only aspect of fly fishing ive never tried with much intrestd :S . But now im going fishing this weekend on a litle stream and dry flys are the best option there . Now im wondering what flys should i get and in what sizes , im a total newbreed in dry fly fishing and never caught a fish with it haha , well one salmon on a bomber - green one infact - but never delicate trouts and chars so heres the score

Could you give me , lets say names of 10 flies that work in most cases ?

And also the sizes i should get . And also do i need dryers , sprays ect ?

Bryn
one fly I find rarely fails on small streams is a small Elk Hair Caddis - floats well, easy to see (particularly in broken water) and trout seem to love it, even when there are no caddis around. Other than that a Klink hammer, sizes 12 - 16 should do the job.

Default Dry Flies

Hi, Bryn,
Sound advice from Steve, and you could try Deer Hair Sedge, as it is very similar, but maybe darker. Also Comparadun and Steve's suggested Klink. On our small northern streams, Steve's suggested range of 12 -16 hook size is also good. Contrary to what is sometimes written, it is not necessary to use only the smaller sizes. The fish are wary and quick, but not usually sophisticated.
Good luck and tight lines!
TC

Hi Brynjar... I have a little experience of dry fly fishing for trout on your wonderful rivers - The Minivallalaekur and the Grenlaekur. I had some great sessions with Griffiths Gnat (various colours) Klinkhamer, and some very simple dries which consisted of no more than a blob of black seals fur or hare's ear raked out to within an inch of it's life!

I also managed a nice little Char on a 'dry' greased up Black & peacock spider ... We were Sea Trouting one morning and found a pod of rising char near the mouth of the Tungalaekur - didn't have any dries with me, so I coated the spider with earhole grease

I have some pics of the 'Mini' fish somewhere in the depths of my hard drive.. I'll try and dig 'em out later.

10 would be too much choice right now so:

Double Badger size 12 and 14
Sedge size 10 and 12
Red Hackle size 12 and 14
Grey Duster (with a tail) size 14
Sturdy's Fancy size 14, 16 and 18

will see you right.

Remember to hide all the time from the fish. Scare one and you scare them all for 20 yards or more...

Oh and work upstream rather than down.

Default Dry Flies

Hi, Richard,
I note the ( with a tail ) as I tail almost all of my hackled dry flies, even Black Gnats, but not Hawthorn Fly. I give that long back legs. Tailing is an aid to making them sit up. Sedges, of course, don't need that aid.
TC
Hope you got the final chemical info that you needed.

Its stone fly time! Every other fly in the air during the afternoon has two sets of wings. Richard, you are naughty not to share Philip Whites turkey biot stone fly. In the right hands, another incredible fish catcher from Philip.
