The trout season closes on most rivers in Sep/Oct time and dosen't reopen until March/April (there are some regional variations but most rivers are closed to trout fishing between this time).
So to answer your question about what to do during the winter... tie some flies and take up fly fishing for pike!

Hi Chizzers
You can have some fantastic sport in the winter months fishing for grayling. They are a lovely sporting fish and you will be able to take them on the nymph or the dry. For a few tips, check out Phil's website:

http://www.graylinghunter.co.uk/

I am a bit out of touch with the NW scene but you can find good grayling fishing on the Dee in North Wales and also in west yorks.

Lake fishing is a good option in the off season.
Different tactics, but you don't have to go for huge lakes and huge ugly lures. Small is beautiful.

And in the light of criticism that you don't know the law, this might help

remember there's no closed season for rainbow trout though so if you have any rivers with a head of rainbows in it you can fish for them....

Hardly a critisism, just an opinion, there are some heafty fined doled out if you are caught out of season... accidental catches are inevitable, but that is different to ploughing on blindly
