Default Boom Boys

I wish to create some booms to trap floating rubbish in one spot as it flows downstream, hence easier to be cleaned out therefore overhang can be kept to a maximum so fish benefit, without snagging a thousand tampons and condoms everytime the river floods a little. The question I ask you chaps is how to build regarding materials, fixing and any other useful info I might need. If there's someone with experience using booms who could save me time and hardwork please offer your assistance or should I carry on and design my own.

Thanks for taking the time to read

Be careful of the Enviroment agency I am pretty sure you need their permission to place an obstruction in the river,,,,

Booms and other strainers are all too commonly lethal to swimmers - you might want to consider the potential liabilities very carefully.

Mick,
the keeper where I fish does exactly the same in a big mill pool on the Test. He has a floating telegraph pole tied into the bank one end and then braced out into the river the other using a long length of 4 x 2. This catches all the rubbish, plastic bottles etc and makes it easy to pick out. He simply releases the brace during the weed cut pulling the pole in against the bank and at the end of the season gets help to roll the pole up onto the bank.
Unexpected bonuses are all kinds of birds use the floating pole as a feeding station as do water voles. It is also an excellent place to catch trout who wait for any fly life to be funnelled over them.
It is also a good spot to account for the occassional cormorant!

Default Boomtastic!

Thanks Reg

Thats just what I was looking for, something tried and tested. I was thinking of heavy PVC strips on a rope, like the plastic on strip doors when walking into a freezer area. Your idea sounds excellent, especially as I have the materials on site and its just a case of recycling my telegraph poles.
Now you've started me on a great idea I'm thinking of a 2-4 piece boom to aid pulling rubbish into the one bank when clearing out, plus setting the boom angled across the river would hopefully persuade most rubbish towards one bank.

Thanks very much for your help

Mick
