Default What Next?

Well, my first two seasons of concentrating on rivers have been thoroughly disrupted by floods, nevertheless perhaps we will still get a few weeks in before the end of the Trout season, which I think is Oct 31. But what then? Bearing in mind that the ratio of Grayling to Trout that I catch is about 3 : 1 in favour of the Grayling, should I be altering my fishing methods or carry on with the same? Should I continue with upstream nymphs, example, GRHE/PTN size 14'ish; Czech nymphs and North Country Spiders, or do we all change to little pink nymphs and Grayling bugs? ATB, Alan.

Hi Oakedge, I think you will find Trout season ends September 30th.

I just have not that I needed to. Brown Trout.
The close season for non migratory trout shall be the period from and including the 1st day of October to and including the 14th day of March.
Unless you know something I don't.

I'm pretty sure some stocked trout venues allow C & K on browns until the end October?

This from the EA site

(b) Brown trout close season

A close season for brown trout applies to all waters, although dates vary according to local byelaws, which you can obtain from your local office

I am just quoting my Cumbrian ticket for wild Brown trout. Don't know anything about stock fish.

Close season varies depending on where you live I believe

"Trout(excluding migratory trout and rainbow trout)(Byelaw 3.c)
The close season for fishing for trout (excluding migratory trout
and rainbow trout) with rod and line shall be the period from and
including the 8th day of October to and including the 17th day of
March following in all waters of the Midlands Region.
NB. A close season exists for brown trout in all waters in England and
Wales, although the dates may vary from region to region."

taken from the EA byelaws

I would say not - the biggest variable I have found on determing whether or not I catch Trout or Grayling is exactly where I put the fly - not what it is - as I have had days on the Dane when all I have caught have been Grayling on spiders - when fishing for Trout - and Grayling on dries on the Hodder; I have also caught Trout czech nymphing with little pink bugs!

However I am no expert and I would love to see some advice as to how one might select for Grayling (bottom feeders but happy to rise) over Trout using flies and tactics alone.
