Default Picric question.

I don't know if this has been covered before, I apologize if so. Anyway the question is Picric material has been readily available now for quite some time and i would like to know if it has improved your returns, i know it has been a success in the sales side lately but can anyone honestly say that it has made a difference to their returns ?.

Cheers Dennis.

Dennis,

I have tried it in a few patterns, Diawls, Crunchers and Dries (Seals Fur Form), the only 'improvement' that I have noticed is with a Picric JC Diawl Bach, I fished a team of four of them at Rutland, back in June, and no matter where I placed it on the set up, the fish constantly picked it out.

I know the Irish have used for umpteen years now, with varying degrees of rewards, but IMO, it is there for just another varaiant to a thousand and one patterns.

Picric is only a dye - one that's not good for you by the way - it does not have any 'magical' properties - it's a colour, that's all.

A over rated money spinning toxic colour that catches more anglers than fish.

I can second that (in my opinion) I rid my hands of the stuff many months ago for health risks, you can get very good alternative colours with the right dyes.

Hi Lighthouse,Sorry it was the colour i meant, but listening to other people and also carl's reply it looks as if the fish are definitely attracted to it, I personally have never used any picric dyed materials as of yet but was just interested to see if anyone from the forum has found a big difference when using it.

cheers Dennis.

Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely colour and a successful one too. A mayfly tied with a picric dyed, grey partridge hackle is a thing of beauty but .....

My concerns are :-

1. Picric is a dangerous material
2. It can be very adequately duplicated by 'modern, safe' dyes
3. I doubt very much that a trout would decline your fly on the basis that its materials weren't dyed with genuine picric.
4. Picric has been a 'passing fancy', hyped by some magazines much like fluorescent baby wool (remember the Baby Doll?) and any number of other dyes and colours (peach, coral, sunburst etc etc) designed to attract the gullible - whether angler or trout.

Thank's for all the replies,So is it only dangerous for the people that dye the material or is it still dangerous for the person tying flyes with it.

Flyfishing-UK you have a pm.

Dennis.

Your spot on with that mate, while it does give a sound, true colour it is possible to achieve similar results with normal dyes/fabric dyes etc.

Personally I think as there is uncertainty in the health risks invovled in dying/tying with picric I am steering clear at the moment, its down to the angler themselves really with the risks they are willing to take.
