Angry New but trying

Hello everyone,I am looking for some advice please,I have just purchased a cheap 7ft four piece fly rod that takes a 3wt. line I am hoping to use it on small local stream where i have fished for years using small float and worms to catch wild brownies. I would love to catch them on the fly.I visited local fishing tackle shop to purchase fly line but the lightest line the have in stock is 4wt the guy in the shop sez that he dont stock 3wt as it is to difficult to cast,Im gutted to think i might have bought the wrong rod to learn on ,would a 4wt line be better or will that not work on the rod? any advice would be much appreciated thanks

Default River fishing made simple

Fly Fishing the rivers of Lancashire is a pleasant way of passing a few hours after the small brownies which can often be found in good numbers.
I have developed a fairly easy way for me to fish these waters using a 3/4 wt rod and reel with a floating WF4 fly line.A short leader of 6lb is used with a tippet of 3lb fluorocarbon.

Three basic flies are used and all are fished upstream on a fairly short line by wading into position.The important thing is to keep in contact with your fly by taking up any slack fly line as it develops.This way you hit more takes.

The first basic pattern is an unwieghted GRHE ptn;
If there is a good flow you need to get the fly so it is just bumping along the bottom and my better brown trout have been caught this way, a wieghted gold head GRHE,is just the job;
Often while you are fishing a hatch of flies will come off and all of a sudden fish are rising all over the place.I have found a simple grey klinkhammer usually brings results and is a great way to fish;
So that is it and it works for me.The fish are usually small but good fun on a light outfit and it keeps your fly fishing skills fresh.

Get a 4wt it will load the rod faster with shorter backcasts.

You'll be fine with a 4wt on that rod. In fact, you might even find it a little easier to cast than a 3wt.

Incidentally, unless there's a specific line you had in mind from your local shop, I'd recommend you have a look at the lines offered by Pitsford Pirate on this forum (and many others too, for that matter). I've had several lines from him over the past few years and they've been excellent quality and outstanding value for money. (On the other hand, supporting your local shop is a good thing too…)

With the length of line you'll have out the 4wt on a small stream you will be fine and echo that on the Pirate!
