Default River Wandle Trout?

Hi, Was reading the Robson Green thread and someone mentioned the AA episode where he tried to catch a wild trout inside the M25. I remember the AA fished the wandle, but did he get anything from it? Reason i ask is that i live in Clapham, and a strech of the wandle flows very close (through wandsworth). There's a lovely looking pool believe it or not right outside the Southside Shopping Centre that's got plenty of flow, and ranunculus beds. each time i look at it i think it MUST have trout in it? does anyone know? can i fish it free to find out myself???

Cheers
Alex

Hi Alex -

Yes, there are certainly trout in the Wandle, but you may need to look further upstream than the Southside Centre, although our Trout in the Classroom schools programme has been putting fry into that pool ... and elsewhere... for quite a few years now. You can fish it for free with an EA licence, and you'll certainly get some dace and chublets there - in fact it used to be one of my own favourite spots when I lived at the Wandsworth end of the valley.

For more of the other stuff we're doing on the Wandle, check out www.wandletrust.org and www.wandlepiscators.net

Better still, come and join us!! Hope to see you on the banks sometime -

Theo

PS: No, Charles didn't get his Wandle trout for the AA series, but he came back later and evened the score. Pic here: http://www.wandlepiscators.net/?p=39

Hi Alex

After the Wandle cleanup that happens every second Sunday of the month the Wands usually fish the river Wandle. Would be happy to put you onto some Wandle trout Sometime.

The Wands have regular fishing trips if you would like to join in, also weekly fly tying sessions.

Have you seen this thread...

Hi Alex,

I was going to give it a try one afternoon after work this summer but a couple of east euro lads who pretended not to speak eenglij cleaned that pool out with grubs in May. No response from a call to the EA.

There were a mix of various including a 1/2 doz small brownies who would rest on the front of the weed clumps above the bridge. I've been back to look a few times now and some fish which I think are small chub are back.

I'll probably leave them in peace and just keep an eye out for the return of the maggot boys.

Thanks for the info chaps, very interesting, and great Wandle websites. that river looks extremely 'trouty' it has to be said. I am keen to help when i can in the cleanups too, and will definitely get stuck in if you're in the wandsworth area and i'm around.

Sadly, i suppose trout will always be rare in the river due to the number of people who live on its banks, especially the E Europeans for whom C&R is an anathema. If anyone fancies a few casts, i'd love to join you?

re the Southern meet, i'd love to come along, but i'm getting married in December and most weekends are tied up! I'll have a look at the thread tho, and if i can make it, i'd love to join you.

Cheers
Alex

A friend and I are hoping to get a bit of fishing in on the Wandle this weekend. Trying to work out which bits you can fish for free is a little confusing but i guess calling up the Wandle Trust is probably the best option.

It's going to be fly fishing so fingers crossed no one has a hissy fit about health and safety.
