Default Eel-like trout?

Why do some trout, browns and rainbows, become long and lean and look almost eel-like in appearance in a reservoir stuffed with coarse fish fry?

You mean a natural or grown on fish that looks wild as opposed to a pellet fed stuffed stockie that can't grow it's length to match the speed it can put weight on?

I mean what are obviously long-term, resident fish in a reservoir bristling with fry that are completely disproportionate in their weight and length and are dark in colour.

I realise that stockies are like bloated pigs but these fish seem unusually long and lean.

I ought really to measure and weigh them.

Ooops it's 21:00 and there's some "splodgin' on the telly.

For christs sake, not all stockies are 'like bloated pigs'. stocked trout provide the majority of fish that make up our enjoyment. In their place, and correctly farmed, they can be beautiful. is the one in my avatar a 'bloated pig?' It had been in the lake a while and fought solidly for half an hour..!

The reason the fish you describe are as they are is probably due to intestinal parasites. I had a post mortem done on a 36inch? fish i had out of grafham that weighed 4lb and it showed worms and all sorts of other parasites...

Cheers
Alex

Actually, more likely to be a fish 'going back' as they say. Fish get old and die, just like everything else.

I noted a few years ago that stocked trout seem to have some difficulty in learning to fry bash until they had overwintered.

I'd been thinking along those lines myself - why would these rainbows cruise the margins sipping tiny flies when there were shoals and shoals of pin-fry about?

Sorry BB - your fish looks like an excellent specimen of trouthood.

WelshOsprey threw me with his "a pellet fed stuffed stockie that can't grow it's length to match the speed it can put weight on?" comment.

I'd go with Stan's verdict as one good reason why trout can look a bit long and skinny. Even previously good looking wild river fish get old and bit frail looking.
