Exclamation 2008 Monnow Fisheries Association annual auction

Hi All
Nope this isn't spam - just a good thick pukka slice of Herefordshire beef

Many of you on here may well recall that last September the Flyforum team hosted the annual Monnow Fisheries Association auction, the first time such an event has taken place on these boards. It was a tremendous success, raising just over £3K for the river. All of these £'s have gone directly into habitat restoration work on the River Monnow system.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Monnow and her tribs, check out the rivers forum and look back through some of the links and reports. She is a beautiful river with some great fishing. Now then... whilst the recent Monnow Improvement Project accomplished a great deal, there is still much more to be done in terms of securing the rivers productive future; hence our annual auction.

This post is just let you know that the Fish and Fly Team have confirmed their 100% support for the auction and that it will be going online sometime in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, I am passing the bowl around! Last year, the auction received fantastic support from Forum members in terms of generous bids, BUT, what really helped make the event special was the number of lots donated by Forum members - we had flies, fishing days, unlikely booze items and all sorts of other piscatorial goodies which helped us more than double our usual total.

It is a big ask I know, but if you would like to donate a lot, then please let me know either by pm or by posting on this thread.
All The Best - in anticipation

Good stuff boys, thank you very much for your generous lots and bids to date.

To give you an idea of how your very generous support for last year's auction has been used: The £3000 raised from the FFF and Monnow Fisheries Auctions has been used as part cash match funding of a £70,000 habitat improvement project on the Escley Brook. The match funding is approximately 1:3 so your £3000 will enable us to do £9000 of work! If a further bid for funding is approved (hopefully later this month) these monies can also be rolled up and used as match funding at 1:2, which would mean that the £3000 raised could equate to £18,000 of work being done on Monnow tributaries!!

The Escley is a tributary that was a significant trout fishery in its own right. It joins the Monnow at Longtown and was not subject to any work as part of the River Monnow Project because of the then water quality issues, which are now resolved. The farmers who have given permission for the work to be done on their land have also indicated that they are happy for the fishing rights to be let on a day ticket basis so it will mean several very long beats being made available for fly fishing, hopefully from next season. The letting of the fishing is essential to ensure the long term sustainability of the habitat works, ensuring that the river remains in good heart.

From the above you will see that even a small lot or single bid can be very beneficial (£1 could equal £6) to the future of the Monnow trout and your ability to fish it now and into the future.

Regards and thanks again,

Robert Denny.

P.S. When the full auction catalogue goes live I will, once again, put my "services" as a guide for one or more of the Monnow fishing lots up for sale.

Default Lots of kwality on a PIUR

Hi Tigermoth

A day of pure fishing porn....not for the faint hearted

One day one rod West Yorkshire WBT, WRT and Grayling including guiding if required.
09 season any convenience....option for 2nd rod or 2nd day at half of bid value......giving chance to split costs and increase generosity in first instance

Any variation around this theme I can tailor

Great stuff all round Some superb additional lots. Like the sound of SK's fishing porn

Thanks to CF for the detail on the Escley Project - £3K doesn't sound a lot but when you see how it can be used to lever other funding sources - plus the enthusiasm and expertise of guys like CF and WUP then you start to see why we get excited.
Best
Dave
