Default 2 flies on a line...

Last time I was at Thornton, I tried using 2 different flies on the line, to see if the fish preferred one over the other (damsel on the end with a blob about 4 feet up). What a disaster with tangles.

I'm pretty new to the game, so maybe I was trying to run before I could walk, so to speak. Is 2-flies not advisable for newcomers? Is there a technique to tying the 2nd fly to the main line which minimises tangles?

Thanks.

Cheers. That does help. I watched the youtube clip of how to tie the dropper knot. Do you then use a loop-to-loop knot to join the dropper loop to the length of leader line?

Use the water knot for droppers, scroll down to number 6...

Keep the dropper length about 3 inches and have at least 2 feet of tippet between the dropper and point fly.

Was the damsel weighted ?. Blobs are not very ayrodynamic, so they cause tangles.I like to have my dropper(s) about 4' apart and 4'' long.

You could try what I call "The American" method..only because I picked it up in the US. It's also called the "Eye to Eye" method.

Tie your dropper direct to the main line and then use another piece of line to tie the point fly directly to the dropper using the eye of the dropper fly.

The dropper sticks out like a sort of "J" and you don't have the length of dropper line flapping about in the breeze.
