Default Line sizes

I have a few different lines on spools that are unmarked and I don't know what weight they are.

I know that they are either wf7 or wf8.

Is there a way I could measure them to determine which line is which? Is it possible to measure the widest part of the taper with a vernier, would this distinguish the 7 from 8?

Once I've found out which is which I will mark the spools so I don't have this problem again.

Cast them. The one that makes your rod bend more is the 8.

Assuming you had accurate scales, could you actually weigh them?
The 8 weight would be heavier, right?

Am I right in thinking that this would not work with some of the more extreme tapers like 40+ or the michael evans.

weigh the first 30 feet of the line in grams, then convert grams to grains
(15.4323 Grains per gram) then use this table

A 7wt is a 7wt, if the first 30' excluding the tip does not weigh 185 +/- 8 grains it's not a 7wt, regardless of taper or what the line manufacturer puts on the box.
