Default River Fishing Nr London(2 hours drive)

Posted: Today - 08:57 am Post subject: River Fishing Nr London(2 hours drive)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all,

I have asked this question previously but im trying my luck again.

Im trying to find information on season rods on rivers that are within a couple of hours drive of London. I live in South London so im looking at Sussex,Kent,Hampshire(not willing to sell child to pay for it)and at a push Wiltshire.

Im willing to pay a fair bit for decent fishing but not silly money for stocked rivers(Test etc)

Any info would be appreciated.

Mark

Mark,

I wrote this list for The Field May 08.

Try Richard Slocock. 90 mins from SW London. He has a syndicate as well as day rods.

Good luck.

Charles RW

25 inexpensive (ish) places to go chalk stream fishing:

1. Dorchester Fishing Club (www.grhe.co.uk) has seven miles of water around Dorchester, and though there is a waiting list, some inexpensive day tickets are available: contact John Aplin 01305 266500 or 07889 680464 or email john@riverworks.co.uk.

Richard Slocock at Wessex Chalkstreams: www.goflyfishing.co.uk or 01305 848460 has fishing on:

2. The River Piddle at Tolpuddle from £40: Briantspuddle, Throop, Culeaze, Warren Lane upper and lower from £50.

3. The River Frome at Maiden Newton from £50, Frampton from £60, Seven Hatches, Muckleford and Stratton from £75

Richard also offers syndicate rods with miles of fishing on the Frome, Piddle, Bride and Hooke for £475, fishing anytime.

4. On the River Allen in Wimborne, there is free fishing where the river flows through the town.

5. The Salisbury and District Angling Club has fishing on the River Avon (six beats) the River Wylye (two beats), the River Nadder (six beats), the Rive Ebble and the River Bourne (two beats). The full season rod costs £156 and though there is a waiting list, club members can buy guests day tickets on three beats of the Avon for £20 a day. www.salisburydistrictac.co.uk

6. The Christchurch Angling Club, has miles of water on the Frome, the Stour, the Avon and the Crane. Most obviously this is coarse fishing water, but for the specimen trout hunter it is very interesting indeed: a full rod costs £120. www.christchurchac.co.uk

Simon Cooper at Fishing Breaks (01264 781988 / info@fishing breaks.com / www.fishingbreaks.com ) has day ticket fishing on:

7. River Alre at Western Court (upper Itchen tributary) from £75

8. River Lambourn at Donnington Grove from £80

9. The River Avon at Enford Church from £75

10. The River Wylye at Boreham Mill from £75

11. The Wallop Brook or Nine Mile Water (a Test tributary) from £75

12. The Wilsthire Wildlife Trust offers day tickets on the River Wylye at Langford for £30. Contact the reserve office: 01722 792011 or 790770 / langford@wiltshirewildlife.org / www.wiltshirewildlife.org

13. The Norton Fishery has rods on 1000 yards of the River Dever in Hampshire near Sutton Scotney (and three one acre stocked lakes). Rods fish on a named day and may share a rod with a guest at any time, whilst full guest rods cost £30 per day, the cost of a season rod is £399 for a weekday £450 for a weekend. Contact David Hemming by phone 0118 9813863 after 7pm.

14. Barton Court offers day permits on the River Kennet from £65. 01488 658905 / info@riverkennet.co.uk

17. On the River Chess there is free fishing by the playing fields in Rickmansworth.

18. On the River Great Stour in kent there is free fishing within the perimeter of Canterbury.

Charles,

There is certainly food for thought there.

Many thanks for the info.

I must admit though im gutted when i read of the price of the fishing now at the Lambourne at Donnington Grove.I have relatives who are members of that particular golf club and i was able to get day tickets on the water for around £20. Then they sold the fishing rights and the price quadrupled.

Once again many thanks.

Cheers,

Mark

The joys of trying to find quality river trouting, hopefully for wildies, in the second most densely populated area of Western Europe...second only to The Netherlands....

But it's out there, the trick as I have found is to get on the grapevine.

However that is an amazing wealth of information. I remember reading the field article as well, I thought it was excellent.

I have cut and pasted the information so I can plot it on my 'work' map.

Try this site. It's a little further afield but you can get some good river fishing for wild browns for as little as £5 a day
