Default James Robertson Justice

Good afternoon all. In the '70s I remember watching an old black and white series on TV starring James Robertson Justice, in which he was fishing the Test at Mayfly time.

As I recall, he was using a cane rod and silk line. I believe this was part of a series of programmes made by the old Southern TV regional broadcasters. I know he also did an episode about falconry. I've looked all over the .net for a clip of these programmes, to no avail. Does anyone know if and where I might find any clips of his series?

Puss in Boots, this is one for you!

Thanks guys,

Johnny

That wasn't that 'old country' programme if that is what it was called with Jack Hargreaves was it?

The Jack Hargreaves hosted series was called 'Out of Town'.

DVD sets of the series can be obtained online.

I remember the series with a lot of affection. Can still even sing the signature tune. Shame that country pursuits don't get coverage anymore. Jack Hargreaves was a lovely old character.

James Robertson Justice presented and appeared in a number of programmes on wildlife, shooting and fishing, made by Toby Bromley for Anglia TV in the 1960s.

Bromley, who was heir and boss of the shoe chain, Russell and Bromley, died in 2003 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obit...y-Bromley.html. One of the programmes was called "The Angler and the Trout".

Whether prints survived through the changes of ownership that saw Anglia become part of ITV plc is doubtful, but the copyright now probably belongs to Bromley's son.

A biography on James Robertson Justice was published earlier this year http://jamesrobertsonjustice.moonfruit.com.

regards,

Doc

I have some video footage of James Robertson Justice fishing for trout on the Test at mayfly time but it is in colour not b&w. From memory he catches a brown of about 5lbs and then follows it with a rainbow about the same size and in those days these were monsters to someone like me.

As far as I can recall this particular footage was not part of an Out of Town programme but a documentary on the Test.

I rented all the Out of Town DVDs last year and they really stand up well, lovely stuff, not just fishing, there's shooting and quite a lot about country crafts and traditions, it must be very difficult to get anything like that commissioned these days unless there is a celebrity chef involved.

There is a blackbird on every thorn and a cock chaffinch, a twink as they call him there, on every bush...... It moved me profoundly. I had been spared to see another spring, and I thank God for it.”
