The reason behind this is that New Zealand is trying to be green and relies upon hydro generation for their power. THe south Island also has a link to the north Island for power. However at present the hydro lakes are at a very low level and we are having power saving shemes. So the south Island obviously needs more power, hence more hydro schemes. Along with this, dairy is big business over here and they rely upon irrigation schemes. SO most of the big rivers have irrigation extraction levels on them. It can be really disheartening to travel around the east coast of the south Island and seeing the rivers in summer reduced to dry gravel beds. Ideally we need to look at reduction in demand not an increase in generation. Some of the plans such as central plains water scheme and the waiau scheme seem orchestrated to increase profit and not to benefit the community....Sign up all!
