Default Char Fishing in Windermere

Hi there,

Does anyone have any advice / thoughts / information on Char fishing in Lake Windermere?

I'm thinking of having a go - but I suspect it ain't gonna be easy.

Thanks in advance....

They did a program on one of the sky channels about char fishing on Windermere
It was very interesting, the guy they were with lives in the area. It can not remember his name, but that's all he fishes for

It's a very specialist kind of fishing, no rods as such. It two very long came poles on the front of the boat the poles are only to hold the end of the line away from the boat, the other end was hand lined down
The poles had brass bells for bite Indication then once hooked the fish are hand lined back up

On the business end of the line he was using what I can only describe as very tiny spinners with multiple spinners on each line at different depths
And nearly all the fish he catch are at depths of around 60-70ft

Sorry I can't remember his name all I know is he lives local to the lake
Good luck with cathing one
Let us know if you do
Chris
Ps I can try to explain the pole and line set up In more detail if you want just drop me a pm

Matt Hayes and Mick Brown fished for char on Windermere in the 'Great Rod Race' series.

The technique is very much as Maz64 described.

I found this fascinating; it must be one of the most complicated and labour-intensive ways of targeting a species I've ever seen.

Good luck if you decide to go for it. As you say, it doesn't look easy...

Cheers! Castaline.

I assume its roots go back to char fishing for food in days of old when they were plentiful, rather than for sport. Certainly got a novelty value/interest anyway. This makes for interesting reading:

There are 12 pages on charr fishing on Windermere in Falkus & Buller's Freshwater Fishing (pp.50 - 62, 1994 edition) covering habits, trad. fishing, tackle and techniques, with illustrations.

First published in 1975 but may still be useful to you. Good luck if you go and please let us know how you get on - I've long wanted to try here, on L. Langavat.
