Hello mate,

Belflask is one of my favourite fisheries. Been a few times and had great fishing there.

Hot Spots. - Straight down from the hut. The most successful for me has been around at the spit that runs into the lake. Take some waders if you have them. From the car park turn left and walk in a clockwise direction around the lake through the trees to the spit. Start half way up and cast to the left, the bed of the lake drops away quite quickly into deeper water. I've had tons of fish from this spot. You can wade out a little way here too but take care. Good thing is the water is gin clear so easy to see the bottom. Work your way to the point of the spit and you can wade right to the end of it. This allows you to cover a lot of water by fan casting nearly all the way around you. Cast to the opposite side of the lake towards the car park. There is a channel here that the fish seem to move up and down in. Caught lots at this spot.

Tactics. - If no fish showing I have gone deep with intermediate or sinking lines. Let the flies get right to the bottom for the best results. Obviously if fish are showing then use a floating line. If you have two rods, set one up for each of these methods to save time. Flurocarbon a good choice as water is clear.

Flies. - Lures work well here with orange being good. Cats whisker patterns are great here, caught 9 fish on cats last time I went. Buzzers are good in black and olive colours too, could try those under an indicator if you like. If fish are rising the best flies I have used are CDC Parachute/Shuttlecock buzzer types of fly in black or claret. Polystyrene head suspender buzzers are great. Fish seem to like flies in the surface rather than on top of it so these patterns are good.

Hope this helps, sure you'll have a great time. Pike in there and lots of perch too which love buzzers. Some really big perch too so you may get a surprise!

Tight lines,

Nick.
