I've bought myself a Shakespeare Fishing Alpha X Spin Spinning Rod 9 ft and a Leeda 2XL Spin/Baitrunner Reel to go spinning for pike but I was wondering, does anyone know if it would be suitable for sea fishing, off the rocks, if I got myself some sea lures and does my standard rod license cover me for sea fishing?

It should be fine! You don't say what the casting weight range is but I find a rod of 1-2oz (30-60gms) does the job well for wrestling pollacks and lures out of the kelp. You could also have fun with a float for wrasse. And the further south you go, the more species and craic you will have!

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm just thinking ahead, as we are off down to Devon on holiday later this year and I've never tried sea fishing before, so that's great news.

The rod casting is 20-60g.

Grab yourself some cheap silver 32g tobys from evilbay or strap whatever shiny stuff you have to a 1/0 hook seal with epoxy and fish it approx 3' from a 1oz weight...

Thanks G1zmo, I was going to ask what sort of lures people thought best. So those will be ok for spinning will they?

The best and most successful lure I've used for fishing from the rocks has been the old red gill rubber eel. The tail has a pronounced wiggle when the lure is retrieved which appears to be very attractive to predatory fish. I've taken bass, pollack and mackerel on red gills.

The lures work best if the water is reasonably clear, you fish them on a 2 to 3ft trace below a suitable weight for the rod to cast ie in the case of your outfit up to 60grams (about 2 ounces in old money)

My most successful colours of eel have been white or black. Hope this helps.

I have always purchased lures from local tackle shops in the areas I have fished. Most seaside resorts in Devon and Cornwall will have a tackle shop. There was a good one in Torquay I used to visit but damned if I can now remember the name of it. I haven't been there for a few years as I do most of my fishing in Scotland these days.

Just enquire locally when you get to your destination or try googling tackle shops on the net.

If you buy any red gills stick to the small or medium sizes for fishing off the rocks. The larger sizes are better for boat fishing over reefs or wrecks.
