Default Trout do amazing things

I've just been talking to a fish farmer who supplies my club's trout. He was telling me he'd spilt some pellets on the ice on the stew ponds and the trout had found a way to jump on grab a pellet or two and wriggle off. Perhaps I should asked how many he'd had when he spotted this phenomenon.

Has anyone seen trout doing something remarkable?

Only odd thing really is take flies upside down on the hang (bit weird seen the belly of a fish and your fly disappearing... But I'd love to see that ice trick!!

I know it's not trout, but i've seen Eels taking crunched up Doritos of the surface!

Watched a big brown in the river fleet by the road bridge. It had a white patch on the end of it's snout. The fish would trun down stream, the bump into the banking, you'd see silt come away. The fish would then trun upstream. Obviously knocking/dislodging something out of the banking then picking it off as it drifted with the current. It repeated this for quite a while.

When fishing Stocks one evening. I saw a huge bow just sitting a few inches of the bank near Bell Pont facing towrds the bank. It's back was out of the water. I tried several casts at it, managed a hookup using a sedge pupa only for the hook to pull out when it ran towards the middle. I called it a day and tackled down before tramping back to the lodge, the fish was back doing exactly the same thing.

Taking the bob fly in mid air 18" above the surface is a good one....

On the River Edw I once cast a dry and nymph (NZ style) attempting to get under a low hanging branch. The cast was too long, the nymph went over the low hanging tree limb whilst the dry settled on the water on my side of the tree (anchored to the tree the dry just stayed unnaturally in the same place on the current). I paused for a while, thinking how best to remove the line without snagging the branch. The nymph in the meantime was dangling 2-3 feet above the water. Before I could flick the line back a little trout leaped clear out of the water for the dangling nymph and just missed it. I always wondered what would have happened had it taken the airborne nymph - probably a break off.

Goes to show how unimportant accurate imitation really is (in most circumstances)...

at Alderneuk one day in the summer, I saw a dandilion seed blowing about 6 inches across the surface of the water at a fair old speed and then a huge rainbow trout jumped out and snatched it from the air!
I couldn't believe what I saw!!
The fish must have tracked the thing in mid air and decided to eat it, thinking it was a fly.
peace

When I was about 14, while fishing a mountain lake in Connemara (Ireland), my brother and I noted a trout swimming around on the surface with a small twig stuck in its mouth.. The twig was maybe I inch long and it was sticking into the roof and the bottom of the mouth of the fish, basically resulting in the mouth being left jarred open. The fish went nuts on the surface for what seemed like several minutes before eventually stopping. I’m not sure if it eventually died or not….

Another day my brother threw the white inside of a reed into a lake from a high bank, and a trout immediately jumped up and ate it.

On yet another day about 3 years ago in NZ I noticed a trout of about 6lb lying facing downsteam (6lb would be average size of brown trout on this river!!)
I watched for ages and it didn’t move… The fish was not in an eddy and the flow was reasonably strong…

I managed to reach down with my hand and slowly raise the fish towards the surface.. As the fish reached the surface it suddenly woke up and tore down through the pool with a great big bow wave left behind. It kinda scared or shocked me… I’ve never seen a fish behave like this before…

Cheers
JJ
