Default Fishing at Bellingham / Alnwick Northumberland

Hi

Can anyone help me, I'm staying in Bellingham and Alnwick in Northumberland in June. I want to do some wild Brown Trout / Grayling fishing, Rivers or Still Waters. I'm not really interested in Salmon fishing, never done it and wouldn't know where to start. I fish Dartmoor Reservoirs and Rivers, so anything along those lines would be great. I would be really grateful for any recommendations.

Cheers

Hello mate,

While you are in Alnwick I'm sure you'll have to go to the Hardys/Greys Shop for a visit! (Take your credit card!) Speak to the staff there and they'll help you. They sell day tickets for the River Aln there too I think.

If you want a good stillwater venue with browns/rainbows then Chatton fishery is a short drive North of Alnwick and is fantastic. A very friendly fishery with great fighting fish and reasonable prices too. Catch and release available too. You can get a great bacon sandwich in the lodge too!

Home

Hope this helps. Tight lines!

Nick.

There is some decent Brown trout fishing on the North Tyne from Bellingham up to Falstone (just below the dam). You can get tickets for the Falstone stretch from the Black Cock pub in Falstone itself. The Riverdale Hotel also has as stretch of fishing through the village itself. It is free to guests but I think they also do day tickets. Give them a ring to confirm

There is also the River Rede to fish which is very close to Bellingham. Some excellent trout fishing can be had on there and they are quite willing to rise to a dry fly. If you need a guide I can recommend Gary Proudlock for the Rede. Contact Otterburn Hall Hotel for permits

The Coquet near Alnwick is a popular stretch to fish. Northumberland Anglers Federation have several miles of water and we can do permits for you in the shop for the Brown Trout fishing

For the Grayling you really need to head to the River Till or Tweed. If you contact the Posta Office in Ford village they can put you in touch with Brian Thompson, the river keeper for the Till. Day tickets are available. For the Tweed you would be better to book through FishPal as there are numerous beats controlled by different owners/clubs

You also have an abundance of stillwaters in the area. You have Chatton Lakes at Chatton near Wooler. Ali and Roger will assure you of a warm welcome and good fishing. You also have the two large reservoirs of Fontburn (near Rothbury) and Kielder (near Bellingham). Both are controlled by Northumbrian Water. For boat fishing you have the very scenic Sweethope Lough (not far from Bellingham) which can fish very well. There is also Caistron Lakes near Rothbury (close to Alnwick) which is located in the Coquet Valley and is very scenic and also a SSSI. Good hard fighting trout there in gin clear water

If you need any advice call into the shop or give us a ring and we will be happy to help you out and make any arrangements for you

Shop details at How to contact Game Fishing Supplies Ltd

Hope this helps a bit

The Till and its tributary the Breamish are fisheable without an NRA licence , as they come under the Tweed, but there's loads of other fishing available, easker1

Thanks everyone thats great really looking forward to it. I think I will wait until I am there and pop into Game Fishing Supplies and the Hardy shop. I like the look of the Rede and the Aln and I guess I better give Kielder a go as well. The Tweed is very tempting but I think I might be pushing it with the wife if I go fishing too much. Thanks again for your help. I've recently started fly tying and I am going to post pictures of a few of my meagre efforts on the fly tying pages in a day or two so if you fancy a laugh have a look.

Maybe a bit of a hike from Bellingham (about 20 miles), there’s a completely new stretch of the River East Allen controlled by Allen Valley Angling & conservation up at Allendale. The Tyne Rivers Trust’s Angling Passport might also be worth a look, giving access to a number of beats on the North & South Tyne and their tributaries.

The links below have a lot of info about the local fishing. ‘The Fishing Archives’ website has full listings, and ‘The Lambton Worm’ has detailed descriptions of beats for fly fishing for trout on The Wansbeck and The Coquet, as well as info on the salmon fishing on Tyne & lower tweed and many of the local Stillwater trout venues.

Tight Lines,
