Default fishing in the cold

Ok guys
The 'earth is hard as iron and the water like a stone'

So who has been out fishing today and how did you get on?

Was it worth freezing?

Bit bloody early to be asking that. The spuggies are still queuing up to take a leak round here.

Hi GG

I was out yesterday, Friday. The reservoir was threequarters covered in thin ice. The sun was out and little wind. I found a clear area in the sun which was really pleasant. I fished for two hours and had five nice rainbows. I have to say as it wasn't unpleasant or a hardship. I really enjoyed myself. It was well worth going out under those circumstances.

Hi GG
I fish a 22 acre reservoir at a place called Barley near Burnley. It's located part way up Pendle Hill so it's exposed to all the elements. I've fished it for twelve years so I think I can say I know it well. I've fished in the harshest winters and always managed to catch. The trick is to get down onto the bottom with a Di5 or Di7 line and a lure that floats or else you loose them in the rocks. A very slow with the odd jerk type retrieve seems to work best for me. Orange is my favorite colour. This method only works well in freezing conditions when the fish are on the bottom bottom feeding.

Been out to a few small lakes around south Wales recently, was out yesterday at ravensnest. Fish are down deep, caught 11 fish up to 8lbs on tungsten 'bugs' that I normally use for grayling! Many are frozen over so I have been river fishing for grayling instead as they still bite well in the cold.

Just back from a blank after the grayling on the river. No maggotbashers caught either. My mate lost use of his fingers about 10 am and I had to tie him up a new leader. The right leg of my waders soaked right through to the skin shortly after. Then I tripped and managed to steady on a submerged rock, plunging my right arm in up to the elbow. Four layers soaked through and developed a covering of ice. Lost use of my hand for a while as I couldn't get it dry, it ached a bit with the wind chill factor. I think the ladies are feeling the cold today!

Still, mustn't grumble, I went fishing!

Aye stick to rivers........its got to be a wee bit colder for them to freeze over.
we are out in all weathers, worst being -6 deg. Tackle failure is the only issue.
