The names can be confusing until you get your head around the fact that they are just that- names given to sinking lines. What you really want to know is the rate at which they sink.
Intermediates sink at between 0.5 and 2 inches per second- the other names you get either refer to brands or to where they fit into this sink rate' eg A Slow Glass typically sinks at around 0.5 to 1 inch per second, A Fast Glass at 1.5 to 2 inches per second. (Both are names given to lines produced by Airflo)
The term slime line refers to the clear intermediate lines available- usually these sink at 1.5 to 2 inches per second

Medium sink lines sink at 3-4inches per second (eg Di3- 3" per sec)

Fast sink at 6-8 inches per second- Di 7 Di 8 etc

A midge tip is a floating line with about 3 ft of intermediate line joined to the end of it- so the tip sinks and gives a different retrieve pattern- you can get a similar effect with a polyleader.
Hope this helps to make things clearer.

Dave,

There are as many fly lines out there as there are Hares Ears in my fly boxes, and there's a lot of them!

Basically you can get a slow intermediate which is good for pulling wets just a few inches down or nymphing at up to a couple of feet.

Next you can get a fast intermediate which is a great line for fast fig 8ing or steady pulling to keep the flies in the top 3-4 feet depending on how long you let it sink. "Slime" lines fall into this category. Basically these are clear intermediates that are slippery in the hand when wet. The Mastery Stillwater is probably the best. Expensive, but it should last at least 5 years given reasonable care.

Next up is the medium sinker. Wetcel 11 or DI3 covers this. DI3 is a brilliant line for pulling through at 5-7 feet. I catch loads on this line early season.

Next is the fast sinks. DI5 or HiDs. Great for 7-10 feet

Finally the monsters. DI7 and worse. B*stards to cast until you're used to them. Booby lines. Not for the faint-hearted!

If pushed on a budget I'd go for a fast inter, a DI3 and a DI5. That, with a floater will cover 95% of your needs.
