Default Daftest thing said in the tackle shop

Well I've spent a good few hours over the years rummaging round fishing tackle shops and asked odd daft questions.
Once in a while I have overheard a conversation or been told a gem from a shop keeper.

I was once told the old boat reel I was fingering was the latest model and it was almost impossible to get a birds nest with and would cast from the beach for several hundred yards. I didn't get it ..........

You guys must have have a few stories??????

I was in a local tackle shop and the guy behind the counter fishes regularly at Stocks. He was telling me some idiot had tried to fish the reservoir when it just opened in February and it was almost totally frozen. It just turned out I was that idiot.

Not particularly odd or funny, but I was in Sportfish a year or two ago in Pall Mall and it was like a bygone era listening to the old men ( customers ) in there talking to the assistants.....the check shirts, ties ....chatting about salmon fishing in russia / alaska in posh olde bbc tones...it was a bit like the mad old geezer in the Fast Show years ago !

I was in the local tackle shop at the weekend. I bought there remaining stock of a particular drennan hook I like for tying spiders on. Young assistant asked me what I was using them for I told him tying flies on....

OOOOOO no sir you cant tie flies on them You need proper fly tying hooks for that . I asked why, he said they had up eyes and were specially made......There is a shop in York sells em... No call round here

I was in the same tackle shop that described me as an idiot for fishing at Stocks when it was covered in ice. There was a Lancsy Lads meet in June on Stocks and the Heather fly had been doing well. I asked in this shop if they had any Heather flies and the assistant said he'd had not even heard of them let alone stock them. I replied that I'd look for a substitute like a Bibio or black hopper. Whilst looking through the clear plastic drawers guess what I found? Yes loads of Heather flies in different hook sizes.

Why do I patronize this shop? It's convenient or I wouldn't.

During the 1990's a friend of mine had a small tackle shop in a village that had a busy main road running through it so he did quite well with "passing trade"

one day I was in the shop having a chat and buying some odds and sods when a bloke walked in, looked round taking in the displays of rods and all sorts of other angling gear then said, "DO YOU SELL FISHING TACKLE IN HERE."

Words failed me

There's a shop near me (it shall remain nameless because I actually rather like them) who routinely give effusive reccommendations for things when I ask for advise, urging me in the strongest terms to get x, and providing convincing reasons for why x is perfect for my need.

And then, when I am finally persuaded, they inevitably (and rather reluctantly) reveal that it x is currently out of stock.

Glasgow Angling Centre should have them on comission, because I always end up buying x that online that evening...

Having worked in my dads tackle shop for 5 years it never ceases to amaze me what is discussed in tackle shops.
We used to sell catapults. A regular customer came in one day and asked me "do you sell spares for catapults?"
"yes" was my reply. "what you after?"
Customer...."I've got the elastic, I just need the handle" haha

This same customer was a gold mine of cracking stories for us week after week.
