Default How good is Google Earth...

..for those new stretches of river. It's proved outstanding for recon on Rivers, that I'm unfamiliar with. Parking, entry points, landmarks and terrain finding it a really usefull tool.

Depending upon the age of the sat photo it can be a total treat. Someone will have to get you the link (on here) that has hundreds of your fishing areas via the GM's. Many also have a Google street scenes where you can actually 'pan' right left, etc., and view the area.

Someone invested a hell of a lot of time to put that Puppy together.

Not half.............As mentioned on here before, stick your curser where you want to park, key the longs and lats into your ****nav and off you go. Accurate to a few metres................brilliant............birdsnest

I find if you start off on Google maps,it shows all rivers and small streams, then click on earth or sat view it's a great help for searching out new locations,it helps with the cabin fever in the off season.

It's pretty good - but knowhere near as good as Where's The Path:

Where's the path ?

You can input grid references, search place names, check route lengths using the little route length mapping nodes thingumy, and to cap it all - you have a OS map to compare the aerial photography to.
Hope it helps some of you find some out of the way places... it has helped me when exploring the lake district and my Welsh homeland.

It has gotten more useful over the past 2 years, but as Fred says it depends on the age of the photograph. Much of the US and Canada is still spliced together using old aerial photographs, not satellite images. A lot of these photos are from high altitude so the zoom-in resolution just isn't there.

Also, the season in which the last satellite pass was made makes a big difference. Generally fall or early spring is best because the leaves don't obscure the view. The only problem is that if it's a spring shot, the snowmelt often exagerates the size of a river, so I've gone looking for a river in Canada that wasn't actually there except in the spring.

It's still a very handy scouting tool, but like looking at maps it often leaves more questions than answers when heading into remote terrain.
