Iron? Pollution? Help?

Is there any chance that something died there like a lamb or fox perhaps?
Or something that has decayed.

I tend to agree with you Jim. This often happens where there are old cast iron drainage pipes that discharge close to streams or stillwaters. The orange rusty colour that stains clothes and boots is actually rust in water.

Do you have any old mine workings near by, ? we have this problem on the river I fish, we were told that it is from the old mine near by and its not dangerous, there is salmon, brown trout, and greyling in our river and they are in excellent condition.

Iron is very likely - there are surrounding mines - plenty of trout in the river - all in immaculate condition.

As long as it isn't dangerous or damaging to the river.

It is ferric iron or ochre, the product of a chemical reaction, which is relatively harmless.

it might be harmless but i would keep an eye on it if i was you. you could send a picture emailed to the environment agency to see if they need to investigate.
