Default Fishing diaries

Going to start to keep a fishing diary this season. I am looking for inspiration on what to put in it, temperature, water levels, atmospheric presure, wildlife seen etc. What do you guys note down in your diaries? Jon

Used to, but got out of the way of it. I have years and years of them and they make interesting reading. I seemed to catch more fish back in those days

There's a thread on here about Fishing Diaries

When I first started fly fishing in the 70's I used to write a diary and very useful it was , with experience came laziness and I stopped doing it I still have it along with detailed maps of Morehall when the water was right down , a nice nostalgic read .
I have started keeping one again since i came here 6 years ago, I use Excel spreadsheet and have a google earth map printed off and fishing swims marked with a code number , I then enter dam , area code, size of fish caught , water level - my local dam has useful above sea level height markers, temperature , wind , lure , depth fished , time caught , other notes . By using Excel I can convert to graphs, see patterns and number crunch easily . I also photographed the dams when they were empty in 2008 , very useful now they are full.

I've just started a blog (on here) to be used as my personal diary for this season. I've included most things you've mentioned and it will be a reference for me.

I used to use the Lotus Approach database to keep my records but like others, have gotten lazy and stopped using it.
Got about 10 years worth of data and it's a handy reference tool.
It's great to be able to filter by venue, time of year, etc so you can check records relating to your upcoming outings.

Was given a Ely Game diary in 1984 and with one exception (1996 the year of my finals degree exams) i have kept one ever since. (it included rugby, shooting and other interesting exploits as well as fishingLOL) I used to buy a new A4 diary every year, but bought a good quality notebook in 2004, which i completed last winter. Treated myself, and now have a John Humphreys Fieldsports book. It means everything written is written very neatly now! Weather, catches, lack of catches, Fishpal river height, flies used, any new info learnt etc. Take your pick.

Hi

I kept a diary on and of for a few years . Until a couple of years ago when I started the blog. The blog was started initially so an ill relative could keep up to date with what I was doing. Sadly hes not with us anymore but the blog will continue. Try it. it does make you think more carefully about what you write...also it allows you to keep a photographic record...

For those of you who like fishing diaries, you really must get hold of a book called Muriel Foster's Fishing Diary. It is a beautifully written diary with fantastic illustrations. Quite hard to get hold of, but it is the one fishing book that I really cherish.
